Abstract

In the Nigerian construction industry, many construction projects have failed as a result of unethical professional practices on the part of the construction professionals whom management responsibilities are vested on .Professionals are expected to exhibit high level of professionalism by adhering to their professional ethics when discharging their duties. This study adopted the survey design aimed at examining the causes and effects of unethical professional practices on the management of construction project in north-western States of Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 200 participants from kaduna, Kano, Sokoto and Zamfara States. Structured questionnaire was designed and administered on construction professionals (Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Builders and Civil Engineers). Chi- square statistical tool was used to test the hypothesis for the study. Findings revealed the absence of punishment for corruption; loss of money due to change in government; lack of continuity in government programmes, availability of loop holes in project monitoring; among others are some of the causes of unethical professional practices which have serious effects on construction project management in Nigeria and also the result revealed vulnerability to frequent maintenance work, delays and cost overruns as the extremely severe effects of unethical practices on projects management and adherence to professional ethics, transparency and accountability in contract administration, the use of approved construction designs and specifications from certified professionals as highly effective remedies for curbing unethical professional practices. Government should therefore stop paying lip services to the fight against corruption and abide by due process in executing all of its construction projects. Professionals, Contractors and Civil servants should also exhibit the hallmark of professional excellence through adherence to ethics, values, competence and integrity.
